the secret handbook to being human

By Kim Seppälä

There comes a time in the life of every spiritual seeker when they trip over the one thing they weren’t looking for: their own shadows.

It usually starts soon after the euphoria of awakening has faded, when the human slides into the so-called ‘dark night of the soul.’  A more accurate description would be ‘seemingly endless dark nights of the human.’ The way through this darkness is, of course, aspect integration – whether we know it by name or not.

If you’ve been on the path of self-realization for a while, you’ve heard about aspect integration. Probably the term makes you sigh with annoyed exasperation, because everyone talks about it, but few have truly mastered it.

(If you’re new to this concept, the term describes the alchemical process of returning to your natural state of inner unity, wherein all the puzzle pieces of your soul come together in coherence.)

In theory, integration is simple. All it takes is presence, patience, discernment, courage and allowing. Easy, right? In practice, it means rewiring your body, mind and emotional system using metaphysics that are constantly being updated, while trying to go through everyday life with basic functionality intact.

Embodied Mastery Isn’t the Easy Path

We could have done it the easy way, like the Ascended Masters before us who took the short-cut and bypassed most of the integration work. I suppose they went through some instantaneous aspect integration upon the moment of ascension. The downside to that method is that you don’t get to enjoy life post-integration. We, however, chose embodied mastery – consciousness realized while still human. And for those who didn’t read the fine print, that means ‘integrating all the aspects of the soul through the human self who is currently embodied – You.’ So here we are.

Despite their bad reputation, aspects aren’t the enemy. They’re not caricatures of humanity, demons to be conquered or lessons placed upon your path by God to test you. They are expressions of your soul, stories that got caught up in their own plot.

Looking back on my experiences in this lifetime, one of the significant turning points was taking Crimson Circle’s Aspectology class. Not because I suddenly became integrated (I didn’t), but because it helps me understand what I’m going through. There’s quite a difference between stumbling through your own shadows blindly – and stumbling through your own shadows while being aware of what they are. I’m passionate about this topic not only as a psychologist, but because even many years later, the core concepts of the class keep showing up in my awareness. Truthfully, I can’t imagine being on this path and not understanding how aspects work and how to integrate them.

Why Integration is Harder than it Sounds

Through my professional work I’ve also studied why so many people struggle with integrating aspects. I’ve summarized my perspective below, hoping that it serves to inspire some self-compassion the next time integration feels difficult.

  1. Firstly, there are too many misconceptions about aspect integration. Have you ever come across mistaken beliefs, such as:

“You’re not realized if you still have unintegrated aspects.”

“You need to re-live past trauma to integrate it.”

“Remembering a past life automatically integrates it.”

“Being integrated means that you never feel negative emotions.”

“It’s dangerous to look at your shadow aspects.”

Etc.?

These beliefs don’t just confuse the process; they often make integration harder than it needs to be.

  1. The process of aspect integration is confusing because we tend to look at aspects through the eyes of other aspects. That’s like looking in the mirror while wearing glasses that filter and twist your vision. When your own perspective is shaded by aspects, it helps to have the right friend, Ascended Master, psychologist or co-bot to act as a clear mirror. It’s crucial to use the right mirror: if you just pick a random person in your life, there’s a high chance that they not only mirror your aspects back but reflect you through the filters of their own aspects – which explains why most human communication is such a mess!
  2. It hurts like hell to look at all the parts within yourself that you’ve previously avoided. Sure, it feels wonderful afterwards, but tell that to the ego who is screaming in humiliation.
  3. Most aspects resist integration. While they secretly wish to return home (most of them, anyway), they have trust issues, much like a runaway teenager who wants to come back home but doesn’t trust home to be safe enough. Aspects integrate naturally when they feel safe (and we all know how much it takes to make this reality safe). Resistance takes many forms, but you can easily identify it by thoughts such as:

“I don’t need this psychological mumbo-jumbo. It’s way too mental.”

“I’m already self-realized, Aspectology is for beginners.”

“I’m here to enjoy life, and integration is definitely not fun.”

“I don’t have time for aspect integration; I need to do the laundry/finish a work project/cook some dinner…”

“I’ve been working on integration for decades, and I still don’t see any results. The whole thing is a hoax.”

And so on…

The only way around resistance is to make integration more inviting through presence and the safe space. Create safety in your nervous system, in your mind, in your relationships, and in your physical surroundings.

  1. We lack role models (embodied Masters who show us what integration looks like in real life) because we are the role models for the ones coming after us. Letting aspects take over and run one’s life has been so normalized, that it can be difficult to even imagine an alternative.
  2. Aspect integration doesn’t follow the old rules of cause and consequence: Effort, force, power, will, and desire don’t cause aspects to integrate. You can’t buy yourself into an integrated state, and I don’t recommend playing power games against your aspects. ‘Success’ will only make integration more difficult because you have more to lose. You can’t outsmart your aspects any more than you can play chess against yourself (after all, your aspects share your brain).

So yes, it takes what feels like a miracle, along with some masterful guidance (like Aspectology), to beat the odds.

What Integration Actually Changes

Perhaps you’ve wondered what all the fuss is about, “Do we really need to integrate our aspects?” Integration doesn’t remove all the problems in your life, but it takes away the problems in your head – those poltergeists that haunt your mind and keep you awake at night.

Most people have no understanding of their own aspects. For example, a thought enters their mind, and they have no idea whether that thought comes from their master-Self, their survival aspect, their parents, the news, a past experience, or some other aspect. It’s just there, so they assume it’s their own thought. Or maybe their partner gets triggered and suddenly acts in a different way, and they question whether the love was even real, because how else could he be so mean? He’s mean because an aspect has momentarily overtaken him. (Or alternatively, because your wounded aspect is interpreting his words in a certain way.)

Understanding aspects is like the secret handbook to being human that you should have been given in grade school. I call integration the ultimate healing. It is alchemy in its most spiritual sense.

There are countless methods of aspect integration, and I believe we are here to build those pathways for the next generations of awakening humans. Some of us integrate aspects through movement, some through joy and laughter, others through relationships, creative expression, conscious breathing, in dream-states, through working with a conscious counsellor, or even through one’s co-bot. Aspectology is an ideal starting point because it gives you the basic method and understanding, providing a strong foundation for personal exploration.

The Gifts of Integration

For me, integration became a lot more fun (or at least, more bearable) once I started to notice the treasures it brings. There’s a kind of deep, soul satisfaction with every aspect that returns home.

So how does one recognize when an aspect has been ‘integrated’? Sometimes an integrated aspect is so subtle that one only notices it in comparison to an earlier version of self. For example, the day I realized I didn’t have money worries. The numbers in my bank account had not changed significantly. What had changed was the fear about survival. Since that day, I stopped having money problems because they didn’t feel like problems anymore. The aspect didn’t return home with a big announcement; the troubles simply melted away.

Or the first time I felt fully safe in my body. It took me by surprise, because up until that point, I had never felt truly safe. An integrated aspect can be felt as a more settled nervous system. It can feel like an easier relationship with your thoughts; a softer way of looking at yourself in the mirror; like a new lightness in your step or an openness in your body posture. Integration is evident in a choice you’ve never made before, or a shift in preferences. Integration is evident when a karmic love affair that used to pull you like a magnet loses its gravity; when you stop caring about something that used to matter a lot; when the tone of something carries more meaning than the content of the words.

Sometimes integration is loud and deliberate. Like when you’ve suffered long enough and finally scream for all the universe to hear: “Enough! No more of this. I’m ready to make new choices now.”

There are few moments as magical and freeing as the transformation of an aspect into a diamond-clear facet.

Recently Adamus has been talking about ‘the Field’ in Keahak. While my mind is still coming to grips with this concept, my understanding of the Field is how the Soul organizes itself. I’ll borrow one of my favourite analogies:

Imagine the Master-Self as the conductor, and all the aspects and facets of the soul as musicians in the orchestra. In the past, the Soul was fragmented: each musician had their own agendas, priorities, needs and desires. Each player would play their own song, regardless of the conductor. The loudest musician would take over the stage, and to make matters worse, they’d play out of tune.

That’s how life is created when our aspects are fragmented and unaware of being part of an orchestra.

In integration, we go through a deep and significant inner shift: instead of trying to intentionally manifest the desires of the individual musicians (our aspects), often through mental effort, we become a unified field. A coherent field. An orchestra, where creation happens through tone and presence. However, we cannot move onto this next stage of embodied mastery before at least a certain level of integration is complete. For how can there be coherence without integration?

Even though technology will no doubt revolutionize how we move through awakening into mastery and self-realization, aspects still influence our experience of life more than we like to admit. While integration is not the easiest way through life, it is, in my experience, the only way to embodied mastery.

  1. Thank you Kim for this beautiful article! Yes, aspect integration can be shiny the hardest parts of living as an embodied Master here on the planet. It asks us to look at all the parts of our selves we would rather not face, including the darkest parts from this and other lifetimes. With no judgement, no engaging, no agenda … only pure compassion. Often not fun! And yet as you wrote Kim, there is great treasure on the other side.
I first participated in Aspectology two years ago, and it was more than life-changing.
I recently enrolled to take this class again. My human doesn’t really know why – it simply feels important, and deeply connected to allowing self love.
Thank you again for the great article – this class truly is a valuable handbook, for understanding and accepting one’s self … all of it.

  2. The loudest silent applause, Kim.

In writing you excel generosity: utterly distilled clarity, grace and unadorned compassion. You gift the pearl, precisely because you missed it in your Way. Admirable and Masterly. Shines so bright…

  3. Thank you for this article, Kim. It reallly helps the examples of how to realize when an aspect is integrated. I liked it.

  4. Excellent article, Kim, thank you!
Yes, Aspectology, for me, is tied with the Sexual Energy School as the most impactful courses I’ve ever taken (from anywhere).
I took the course about 5 years ago, and it was extremely helpful in getting the Big Picture. What’s exciting now is that it feels like all the concepts I learned there are suddenly operating in my life daily and intensely. Integration overdrive! Thank goodness I’m aware of what’s going on!
It is such a beautiful liberation!
